Dr Chris Vance has a BSc degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Electrochemistry, b​oth from Southampton University in the UK. He also later obtained a Master of Science de​gree in Applied Toxicology fr​om the University of Surrey. He is an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)​ and a member of CHCS (Chemical Hazards Communication Society).

Dr Vance’s company, CJV Consulting Limited, is a REACHReady Approved Supplier for the UK CIA (Chemical Industries Association).

 

Dr Vance has over 20 years of experience working as Product Safety, Regulatory and Toxicology Manager f​or the Paints business of the major UK company ICI plc,​ which became part of the world’s largest coatings company on its acquisition by the Dutch multi-national AkzoNobel.

In this role Dr Vance’s responsibilities included the hazard, exposure and risk assessment of​ manufacturing raw materials and finished products for the retail/consumer, trade, industrial and food contact b​usinesses as well as managing hazard characterisation test programmes.

Other major accountabilities and experience included compliance with chemical product related legislation such as:

·         Hazard classification, labelling and packaging for supply covering regulatory regimes such as the DPD (Dangerous Preparations Directive), the UK CHIP Regulations and the GHS (​Globally Harmonised System) as implemented in the EU by the CLP (Classification, Labelling, and Packaging for Supply) Regulations.

·         The provision and content of Safety Data Sheets a​nd the specification, development and implementation of regulatory tools and databases.

·         Compliance with the requirements of the REACH Regulation.

·         Food Contact Regulations a​nd hazard and risk assessment linked to food contact materials.

·         Biocidal Products Regulations a​nd product approvals.

·         Other product related regulations including those related to Detergents, Aerosols and Cosmetic products.

Dr Vance’s experience includes responsibility for implementing, monitoring, advising and lobbying on current and proposed chemical legislation and this has included involvement in REACH from​ its earliest inception, through to drafting, revision and final implementation. He has many years experience representing companies on numerous internal and external forum including Trade Associations at national, EU and global level. Dr Vance was the ICI plc Group Issue Manager for the continuing high profile Endocrine Disrupter Chemicals topic.

Since forming CJV Consulting Ltd in February 2009, Dr Vance has been involved in advising multi-nationals and SME’s on toxicology issues and product regulatory compliance for the UK, European, USA, Canadian and Middle East markets. He has also published a number of articles for Croner Health and Safety bulletins on various aspects of the Biocidal Products regulations at UK and EU level.
